Action alert! Drug policy reform

Speak up! Stand-up! Get involved!

I created this section to keep you informed about actions that I initiated or that I find worthwhile and potentially impactful. Feel free to comment on this post to alert me to actions you are promoting. I mostly focus on global actions or actions with broad potential.

Ask President Obama to respect the right of the states of Washington, Colorado and all the states that have legalized medical marijuana

[emailpetition id=”3″]

As the drug policy debate moves to the US congress after the historic approval of marijuana legalization in the States of Colorado and Washington, we must keep the pressure. Stand firm for the defense of the newly gained right of the people of Colorado and Washington, as well as those of all the medical marijuana states. Add your name to this petition and it will be delivered to the White House.

We also encourage you to contact the White House directly at http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact.

Tweet the following message: @BarackObama we urge you to respect the will + rights of the people of WA + CO! http://ow.ly/f9KKx pic.twitter.com/r0AwewgP

Last but not least, help us promote this petition. Share this message with your email connections, share the link to the petition http://www.world-war-d.com/petition-wa-co/ on social networks, blogs, groups, etc.

Uruguay

In November 2012, the government of Uruguay presented to its parliament a project of legalization of marijuana legalization under state control. The project is being stalled for lack of public support, and president Mujica has announced a nationwide debate in the coming March. Uruguay needs our support more than ever. If you haven’t done so yet, please sign our petition in support of the controlled legalization of marijuana in Uruguay: http://www.world-war-d.com/2012/10/14/petition-in-support-of-the-controlled-legalization-of-marijuana-in-uruguay/

Guatemala

The time has come to renew our support for the Guatemalan leading role in drug policy reform. Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina is the most vocal advocate of drug policy reform in the world, and deserves all our support. He started calling for a debate on controlled legalization since his very first days in office. Since then, he has single-handedly brought the drug legalization debate to the OAS, to the UN and to the Davos forum.

I created a petition of support for his action in February 2012, and would like to give this petition a new impulse in view of his recent courageous statements and declarations. If you haven’t signed the petition yet, please do so, then share with your friends as widely as possible. http://signon.org/sign/support-guatemalan-president

Important actions launched by other organizations

Petition the US congress to de-federalize marijuana policy and let the states decide on their own policies

Two members of the House of Representatives, Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) and Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), have introduced measures to de-federalize marijuana policy and create a framework for the retail cannabis production and sale in states that allow it.

NORML has launched an action in support of these measures. Click here to quickly and easily contact your elected officials and urge them to support this historic legislation.  http://capwiz.com/norml2/issues/alert/
